Ann Widdecombe Remembrance memorial
We are saddened to learn of the passing of the Rt Hon Ann Widdecombe, Honorary Freeman of the Borough of Maidstone since 2007. For more than two decades, Ann was a passionate advocate for Maidstone and its communities. Her commitment to public service, fierce dedication to her constituents and unmistakable presence in public life left a lasting mark on our borough. Council Leader Cllr Stuart Jeffery said: “Ann was a formidable parliamentarian, a dedicated constituency MP and a strong champion for Maidstone. The affection she held for the borough was clear throughout her years of service.
Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to share their thoughts and pay tribute to Ann. We know this is a deeply upsetting case that has had a profound impact on our community, and our thoughts remain with Ann’s family, friends and all those affected.
As criminal proceedings are now live and an individual has been charged in connection with Ann’s murder, we have taken the decision to close the book of condolence. This is to help protect the integrity of the legal process and ensure a fair trial can take place. Thank you for your understanding and for continuing to show respect and compassion during this difficult time.
I am deeply saddened by Ann’s death. I met her twice when I was a teenager at St Simon’s Stock School. We had a really good debate about a few topics. More recently we had correspondence about other matters. Ann was an intellect. She really cared about British values, Christian values & sensible British politics. She was a kind, considerate lady with strong boundaries. Ann gave a lot of her time to Maidstone & was very present in the community. Ann wasn’t afraid to get her hands dirty as we saw her take on many new challenges on our T.V. Screens. Rest Easy Ann you will forever be in our hearts.

I have always thought she was admirable for her decency. I respected her direct, straightforward, clearly honest opinions. She had what many don`t - conviction & integrity. Thank you Ann for your work over many years.

We are so saddened and shocked to hear of Ann's untimely death. Whether you shared her beliefs or not, she can be respected as someone who stood by them and wasn't afraid to be different from the crowd. She gave her life to supporting those who needed her, and we are proud to say she represented our constituency. Rest in peace and thank you Ann.

Ann visited me with my newborn son on Christmas day in Maidstone Hospital. She didn't have to do that and it is a good memory of what was a very difficult time.

I am truly heartbroken. She was feisty, but so honest, moral, funny and intelligent. I loved watching her on the Jeremy Vine Show where she was very erudite and almost always right in her opinions. I wrote to her, many years ago, about some of her brilliant novels I had enjoyed reading. She took the time to add a postscript to a letter for me she found waiting to be signed on her desk. I wish I could have met her.....a lady of grit, compassion and fun. She will be truly missed. X

I'm not of your area but I knew Ann very well in the late 90s & early 2000s. She was lovely, kind & loved her animals. We shared a tear together when her sweet cat Smokie had to be put to sleep. She was so kind to people & shared a number of my young work experiences to work with her. I hasten to add they all had a lovely time. I am so sad and that her life has been cut short when she had so much more to give. Also that this happened in her "happy place". Rest in peace my dearest Ann. I'm so, so sorry. From a friend.
