Cooling towers
All premises that have a cooling tower or an evaporative condenser are legally required to register it with the local authority under the Notification of Cooling Towers and Evaporative Condensers Regulations 1992.
We need to make sure the water system is kept clean and well-maintained to discourage the spread of infectious disease (for example, legionella), and to ensure that adequate measures are taken to prevent the infection from spreading among employees and the public.
Applications
You can use the GOV.UK apply for a cooling tower and send us a plan of the layout of your site showing the location of the tower or condenser.
You also need to tell us if the person responsible for the tower or condenser changes, if it has been updated or removed or if there are any other changes.
Your registration will be processed within five working days. We might contact you to arrange an inspection. You need to fill in the pre-inspection of a cooling tower form before we attend.
