UK parliamentary election

The UK parliamentary (general) election is held to elect UK parliament representatives. These representatives are called Members of Parliament (MPs).

For the election, the country is split into constituencies. Each constituency selects one MP.

Different candidates stand for election in each constituency across the country, so each constituency has its own ballot paper with its own choice of candidates on.

The leaders of the main parties do not appear on the ballot paper in every constituency.

Next scheduled election

The next UK parliamentary election must take place by 28 January 2025.

The election follows the introduction of the Dissolution and Calling of Parliament Act in March 2022, which repeals the Fixed-term Parliaments Act.

This re-establishes the pre-2011 process by which the Prime Minister requests a dissolution from the Sovereign. If granted, it would enable the Prime Minister to call a general election at a time of their choosing.
