Pay your Council Tax bill

You can pay by Direct Debit, online, by phone, or in person. Council Tax is charged for the whole year and is usually split into 10 monthly payments. You can also ask for this to be over 12 months, pay the full amount, half yearly or quarterly. Please contact us if you want to change the frequency.

Direct Debit

Paying by Direct Debit is the easiest way to pay. You can choose either the 7th or 27th of the month for your payments to come out.

You can use our form to:

  • set up a new Direct Debit
  • change your bank details
  • change your payment frequency

You will need:

  • your Council Tax account number (you can find this on your bill)
  • the name on the bank account
  • your bank sort code and account number

Pay online

To pay online, you will need your account reference number. This is an eight-digit number starting with a 1 and might end with a capital X.

Pay by phone

You can pay using our 24-hour automated payment line 01622 602544. To make a payment, choose option 1. You will need to have your Council Tax reference number ready and we will need to know how much you want to pay.

Telephone banking, online banking and standing orders

Please quote your Council Tax reference number (this starts with a 1). We need to have received the payment by the 10th of each month.

In-person

You can take your bill to a Post Office or pay at a PayPoint location. They need to scan the barcode on the bill for you to pay.

Allocation of Payments

If you owe Council Tax from a previous year and your payment does not match this year’s bill, it might go toward the past debt. Contact us to tell us which year your payment is for.

You'll need to let us know which debt you are making a payment for.
