Maidstone has 41 conservation areas to cover areas of special architectural or historic interest. Some of them have appraisals and management plans.
Appraisals
Assess the character and appearance of a conservation area, including buildings, open spaces and other features which add to its significance.
Management plans
Is the next step after an appraisal and includes policies covering an area’s buildings, streets, landscapes, public spaces and other notable features. They set out policies to ensure the special character of the area is protected.

Article 4
Some of the borough’s conservation areas have an Article 4 Direction on them as well, including:
- Part of Headcorn
- Eyhorne Street in Hollingbourne
- Part of Lenham
- Part of Loose Valley and
- Maidstone Holy Trinity Church
It means any work that changes the external appearance of a building, or it's grounds in those areas may need planning permission.
We have a duty to protect the borough's heritage, when deciding whether to grant permission or not.
